Crewing up : 1st AC

I picked up a book I had gotten a few years back last night (On Earth We’re Briefly Gorgeous by Ocean Vuong if you’re wondering) and a note fell out of its pages.

A name, a phone number and an email address for Nate Goodman.

I was given this after running into his wife at the local bookstore (Sea Howl Bookshop in Orleans) after we had been chatting about what our lives looked like now being back on the Cape. We had both grown up here and I had memories of her as an older kid in the theatre scene, so I was telling her about the film my partner and I were going to make on Cape Cod. This was in 2020. She told me that her husband was a camera guy, part of the union, and worked out of Boston a lot since they relocated from the West Coast. She gave me his information, told me to reach out, and that was that.

Enter Nate Goodman.

Nate and I connected in 2020 after I had been given his number but at the time, we had nothing more than a hypothetical plan for “Strange Kindness” so there wasn’t much to linger on.

Fast forward to 2022 when things started to happen and Joseph found the main location for filming and we put out a casting call and it became more and more clear that we were going to make this movie. We reached out to Nate again and set up a meeting.

After a few meetings, and Nate’s continued responses of “Yea, that sounds cool”, we locked him in as our first crew member attached to “Strange Kindness”.

I have to say, I think I knew that Joseph and Nate were going to make a great team when Joseph talked about making music videos for ARMAND HAMMER and Nate immediately knowing who they were and revealing the fan he was of their music. That day, the two of them went back and forth for ages about albums and songs and artists, clearly sharing common interests.

Their chemistry continued while we were filming and the two of them developed a partnership during production that gave me that feeling of satisfaction from knowing we had an incredible team.
